How to Be a Mystic
The Sacred Art of Presence
with Rev. Shay MacKay
Mysticism…pushes you to the limits of your imagination and then says, 'take another step.'
~ Carl McColman
Healthy mysticism praises acts of letting go, of being emptied, of getting in touch with the space inside and expanding this until it merges with the space outside. Space meeting space; empty pouring into empty.
~ Matthew Fox in Creation Spirituality: Liberating Gifts for the Peoples of the Earth
Mysticism is an openness to experiencing the sacred everywhere and in everything, and when we surrender to that possibility, the moments of recognition of this Truth, even if they last only a few seconds, are so powerfully expansive that we can never forget them, we can never go back to “not knowing”.
This is not to say that once you have a mystical experience you are always living in an “enlightened” way of being. For most of us, mystic moments are brief and rare, and then real life crashes back in on us – or we crash back into it – and for many of us, we spend the time in between these experiences trying to recreate them, trying to find that portal again, trying to find our way back to the ultimate connectedness of love and light.
How can we develop the skills and habits of a mystic life, a life that's open to awe and connection, to presence and gratitude? Let's together explore different ways of "being" in the world and discover tools that can help us inhabit our lives with wonder.
