Writing as a Spiritual Practice

The Sacred Art of Reflection

with Rev. Diana McLean

“I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn.”

~ Anne Frank

Whether or not you already consider yourself a writer, writing is a spiritual practice available to us all. This retreat uses a variety of genres to engage with our individual spirituality, and with our inner lives. Examples include:

  • Spiritual autobiography

  • Poetry

  • Meditations/prayers/blessings

  • Daily journaling practices

  • Playful prompts and practices

In this retreat, we begin with exploring the “why” and “how” of writing as a spiritual practice, as distinct from the many kinds of writing we may be most familiar with, including academic and professional writing.  Next, we learn to use writing as a means of connecting more deeply with our own spirits and with the sacred as each of us understands it.  Finally, we consider how to make writing as a spiritual practice a regular part of our lives, beyond the end of the retreat.

Created and led by Rev. Diana McLean, this retreat experience can be led in person or online and can be customized for any group’s needs.
